Brief Description

A verifiable digital credential that confirms a student’s enrollment status at an educational institution. This credential can replace manual enrollment verification letters and be used for insurance discounts, loan deferments, housing eligibility, visa status verification, and employer tuition reimbursement programs.

Use Case Actors

  • Educational institution registrar (issuer)
  • Student (credential holder)
  • Insurance providers
  • Loan servicers
  • Employers providing tuition reimbursement
  • Housing providers or visa authorities
  • Credential wallet or learner record system

Pre-conditions

  • The student is actively enrolled or has enrollment history recorded by the institution.
  • The registrar’s system can generate verifiable credentials.
  • The student has a credential wallet capable of receiving and sharing the credential.
  • Policies governing academic record disclosure (e.g., FERPA) are enforced.

Basic Flow

  1. The institution’s registrar system generates an enrollment credential containing standardized enrollment information.
  2. The credential is issued to the student’s wallet or learner record system.
  3. The student chooses to share the credential with a requesting organization (e.g., insurance provider).
  4. The verifier validates the credential authenticity.
  5. The verifier reviews the enrollment information required for the specific purpose (e.g., proof of full-time status).
  6. If needed, the student may selectively disclose additional information (such as GPA) with explicit consent.

Post-conditions

  • The student holds a portable, verifiable proof of enrollment.
  • Third-party organizations can verify enrollment status without manual institutional documentation.
  • Enrollment data is shared only with the student’s permission.

Additional considerations

  • Core fields may include:

    • Student name
    • Institution name
    • Enrollment history (terms attended)
    • Full-time or half-time status
    • Expected graduation date
    • Degree program (if applicable)
    • Term start and end dates
  • Certain use cases (e.g., Good Student Discount verification) may require additional fields such as:

    • GPA and grades
    • Confirmation of good academic standing
  • These fields require explicit learner consent and may require field-level selective disclosure.

  • Privacy and regulatory compliance must align with FERPA and institutional registrar practices.

  • This use case may support standardization of enrollment verification workflows across higher education institutions.
