Short ticket description
There's a request from UC Merced to have a deeper technical discussion about storage usage and how to respond to users reaching quotas in response to @agoose77 checking in on their migration to a dedicated cluster.
This card tracks the follow up meeting work (unless we end up covering it later as part of https://github.com/2i2c-org/meta/issues/2972)
Conversation notes
The primary concern was how to handle a very small number - currently 2 - of users who were using > the 10GB home storage quota and the cost associated with that storage.
We started by walking through how 2i2c thinks about home directories and how storage quotas are assigned to users, and discussed why and when we alert hub admins to changes and overall storage limits, vs. per user limits.
Because storage is fairly inexpensive, at the moment Merced is paying ~$50/month for users' storage. We discussed the relative cost of moving some user data to cold storage; their team will follow up once they've decided how they'd like to approach things.
