SDXL Memory Issues

I was generating images no problem using SDXL models until recently. Now when I try to generate an image with SDXL model it goes fine until 100% progress and then RAM usage spikes to 100% freezing my entire PC for several minutes.

It seems that after generating an image my ram usage still stays around 70% while idle and for some reason my hdd usage is at 100%. I have the webui on my SSD.

GTX 1070
i5 8600k
16gb RAM

I scoured through all threads relating to this and nothing fixed it. I have reinstalled the webui couple of times. The problem is atleast on 1.7.0 releast. I have also tried different combinations of --no-half-vae, --medvram, --medvram-sdxl, --xformers but nothing has worked. I have also used the VAE that has been recommended for SDXL before, and after this problem started.

I am running out of ideas here. It was working fine until one day it just stopped working.
