Question about the 'Send to' buttons

Can someone shed some light on the backend code for the send to img2img / send to inpaint / send to extras / etc buttons. Are these exposed for other extensions to utilize? I know I could use the API but then users have to also have the API enabled for the plugin to work right and I'd prefer to avoid that if there is a fully internal way to handle this.
