What happens if you use both emphasis and alternating words?

Does the presence of a | between square brackets remove one pair of brackets from the emphasis calculation for that segment of the prompt, or do the notations overlap, and both functionalities try to interpret the contents, causing the alternating words to be weakened by the emphasis code seeing the square brackets?

Can you make that clearer by proving an example prompt? I have enough trouble parsing brackets without having them described to me in English 🤣

So, say for example I wanna make a cow|cat with a beach ball, I would write a prompt like:

photo of a [cow|cat] holding a beach ball

That would make it alternate the prompt between "photo of a cow holding a beach ball" and "photo of a cat holding a beach ball" every step. That's what the wiki calls "alternating words".

But lets say I'm just asking for the cat version, but it turns out the AI is paying too much attention to the beach ball and there's not much of the cat visible, with the emphasis function enabled, I could then rewrite it as "photo of a cat holding [a beach ball]" to de-emphasize the beach ball, or "photo of (a cat) holding a beach ball" to emphasize the cat (from what I understand, it's sorta like the CFG scale is changed for just those words in the prompt).

My question is, what happens if I try to use the Alternating Words functionality, while also having the Emphasis functionality enabled in the settings, considering both pay attention to square brackets?

I THINK what you are asking is basically what happens if you do [[dog|cat]]?

The innner [dog|cat] gets tokenized as an alternate token.
The outer []'s are tokenized as emphasized tokens...

So you can think of it as:

DE-EMPHASIZE
|
ALTERNATE
|        |
dog     cat

So it would be similar to alternating between [dog] and [cat] with a single de-emphasis on either.

Just answered before I saw your reply, but to be clear, if both are turned on, and you have brackets with a | inside them, those brackets will not de-emphasize your words. If you put a second set of brackets around that, it will do one level of de-emphasis.

There should be no problem using alternate and emphasis at same time. modules/prompt_parser.py parses your prompt using Lark and emphasis, alternate, schedule are all different rules in it's dictionary.
