Inpainting never works

Been stuck for a month, watched many videos on Youtube and many attempts and not even 5% close to what they can achieve.

I am unable to remove, replace objects/subjects inside the mask area, are there additional plugins I need to get it working properlty?

Gave a try at replacing black dress with white dress using alternative script and this is my best (last, althougth could be improved a lot I think) result, using NAI final pruned with attached VAE :

It's is, like a billion times easier, to do such a task, replacing the colour of a dress, using a mask.

Any reason you're not using masking?

I expected the masking feature within the webui to do just that, mask an area....same as doing it in photoshop or whatever and then importing.

To me, the idea of "pure" img2img, being the original version or the "alternative" one with other reversed samplers, is more attractive than mask, because I don't like to "force" the modification onto the picture through not really good "handdrawn mask paintings". Even "txt2mask" script, or using an external editor for mask painting with advanced tools, still doesn't gives me the same results that I appreciate IMHO. But this is very personal I believe. I do use mask inpainting when I feel it's easier. If you know of a good workflow for "natural-feeling" masking, I'd like to give it a try !
Here, that was really just for fun and to see if that was possible at all to reverse the color of the dress from black to white. Not so easy though.

Also, with bare img2img (no mask), there are no seams. But it is trickier to retain the details. Masking areas that should be changed is of course way more efficient in this regard. But often results in visible seams. and if masked area is too wide, that can become problematic too.

Sometimes I combine both, too. Very appreciable results.

Tired of fighting with Inpaint, I make inpaint great again installing a version of 2 weeks ago, before this madness started.

I think Conditioning Mask Strength has messed sd-v1.5-inpainting.ckpt, and I love Conditioning mask Strength.

So that is my sad solution.

Inpainting works perfectly fine. If "it doesn't work for you" it's because you don't play enough with CFG, Denoising until you find the proper parameters for what needs to be generated. Or because you choose fill when you should choose original, etc. It takes a bit of fiddling before getting used to it. But with enough generations (you won't get the perfect result until you render many different versions) you can slowly fine-tune/build a perfect result.

Seed : the side of the original picture (important)
Script : Outpainting MK2
Pixels to expand : 128
Mask Blur : 20
Outpainting Direction : Choose only one, you'll way more likely have good results this way. Easier to calculate sides one by one.

None of those numbers are golden rule. But it's a good start.
