Future of this repo - I found promising fork

I am thankful for what A1111 and all contributors have made to this repo and the whole work, but since last time there is no "life" in further development. 128 open pull requests and 1.900 bugs waiting for approval/fix for weeks (month now). It seems to be almost impossible for one person to decide about merges (PR) by the whole wonderful but big project it became.

So if A1111 has no time and doesn't want to allow some experienced contributors to make reviews and allow the merging of PR I see just one option:

Move to another "living" fork. I give it a try to https://github.com/vladmandic/automatic
Pros: very active and 365 commits ahead!
optimization, thorch 2.0 and so one...

Most important thing, said from Vlad:

I don't know if I fixed it, but I commented out references to installing this font in the two files that had references to it, and that got rid of this particular error. After a bit more installing of missing modules I got it working, at least somewhat.

I have manually installed some missing modules. I don't remember exactly but I had to do something like:

cd venv/scripts
.\activate
python -m pip install rich
python -m pip install kornia
python -m pip install piexif
python -m pip install rembg
pip install  -r requirements.txt pip -r requirements_versions.txt

you may also copy your "webui-user.bat" from A1111 :)

I usually don't post anything anywhere 'cause i mostly fix problems myself even if it means learning how to code on the most basic level ( which i'm tankful for ) ... but doing that besides my normal job is a real struggle.

I love what Automatic has done and at the beginning as it was pretty much like "Ohh, fucked up, fix it 5 minutes later" and i guess that is what some people here are used to. But in the end you have to get your live together and make money. Being said, this shit can't be managed by one single person anymore, which is the most frustrating thing 'cause he refuses to let anyone else merge/approve stuff.

Like OP said, pull request are piling up and It's only getting worse. As soon as you fix something, something else breaks. AI shit moves so fast it's ridiculous and by limited knowledge of coding this is a common thing.

8h for the last 4 fixes... unpaid full time job no one in their right mind would do unless it's a passion project or hobby.

I for one don't much care for the latest innovations ~90-95% of the time. Just want a stableish version that doesn't have / mitigates random crashes, long / endless loading times, vram leaks, compatibility issues due to overhauls and the like. More frequent updates would not, I believe, solve this problem, but rather amplify it. Anyone who can introduce such separation has got my vote. Otherwise, it's just another competing standard as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't judge the quality of the current commit based on the 1.8k+ issues. The majority of them are old, a ton regarding issues originating from extensions that should be brought up to the extension developers, and a metric ton of install issues from people who have never opened cmd/terminal, can't follow directions or can't google. Aside from that, yeah I agree the development have slowed to a crawl as Auto seems to only come on once every few weeks.

I would love to test and use this fork, but unfortunately the instructions for installing it on windows are not very clear. I tried twice but without success. I guess I'll end up having to wait for some app to come along that makes things work. Too bad the web-ui was abandoned by its original developer.

Awesome, also, maybe in the future, can you check @anapnoe fork: https://github.com/anapnoe/stable-diffusion-webui-ux and talk with him in order to see if you can adapt his UI/UX and fixes to your repo?, because, I F love his UI/UX style... if you do that and @anapnoe agrees, I think I can "retire" and give a good rest to my custom css files :p because @Gerschel and I are a little too busy with work at the moment and we cant maintain and update the quickcss extension as much as we should.

Also, I think I'm going to change to your fork and stop using this main repo for the moment...

if @anapnoe is interested in a collab, i'm totally open to it. imo, due to size of changes and sheer speed at his development easiest option would be to create a separate feature-branch on my fork where he can merge existing work and commit freely to patch anything. and once he'd consider it "stable", i'd switch merge branches.

The Basic stuff is the same in both webUi.. @vladmandic fork is just an Autos webUI with some changes, but the main structure is almost the same... the usage will be the same...

if you make tutorials using @vladmandic fork, is not a problem, everyone using Autos or Vladmantic will achieve the same results... (imo)

If @vladmandic fork gets more visibility, maybe coders can also start pushing PRs there.. He is open to have more PR approvers/manteiners (a different approach as Auto has with his repo).

At the time of posting it did not work on this end despite exactly following the instructions. Gave it another try now and it works. Themes are cool. My extension works with it, which is cool. Performance seems to be well optimized, which is cool as well. I do respect 1111's work, but if that project stops this is, indeed, a valid alternative.

I do have one question, though (did not quickly see it in any docs): Why do the results with the exact same settings seem different from 1111? Different default optimization?

Also, upon launch it throws an empty "Generate 1 image" prompt 3 times, every time. Maybe it has to do with extensions, but that does not happen with 1111.

Something with a dev channel to pretest and that has a maintainer that doesn't shit on their contributors as Auto has (d8hazard knows this as do others).

That is what forks are for. AFAIK the convention used to be that you can do this freely with projects that have been inactive for a long time, or by asking the author for ownership if they were still maintaining it recently. Not sure how it works these days to be honest.

In the end, it is not necessary to officially shut down anything. You decide which repo you want to use. Maintainers own their respective repositories, so there is no question about ownership. Each community member is responsible to decide for themselves which piece of code runs best.

I absolutely understand what you're saying and I agree, I don't think it's necessary to shut this repo down, I don't think anyone is actually asking for that. However, as this is the defacto face of open source stable diffusion
UIs right now, having it sit for such a long period during a time of rapid growth and an explosion of tech isn't really a good look. In the end this is his beast, but it's grown to have a pretty sizeable mindshare so the longer things sit the more vitriol people are going to have towards the platform. Just my two cents on the matter, I don't think anything really needs to change, but I would love to see this repo being actively worked on again; in the meantime @vladmandic is doing a phenomenal job with his fork.

Nah, considering just how many devs he shit on who made the extension that actually is, in 2023, the Automatic1111. If you removed all extensions, do you honestly think this offers anything more? Do you think people would still be worshipping at the Auto altar? Fact is he has alienated a lot of devs who despise him for the way he has treated them, and their hard work. What we need is something new with a real team of devs who look out for us, the extension writers, and the product itself, EVEN (really more so) when that product is free. Professionalism basically.

If he wanted anyone to know about how he was doing he wouldn't be anonymous, would not have run the repo solo, would have communicated with his user base, and would have made an attempt to read and contribute to the discussions here. Those were his choices so people should just respect them.

It’s been a month since his last commit, previously it was 3 weeks. It’s understandable that he’s too busy and also unwilling to give someone else the wheels to his hard work. Hence why this fork. It’s active, maintained and fixed a lot of issues the current repo faces. It’s not perfect, but it’s active and that’s all that matters. Anyone is free to choose what repo/fork they use, this thread simply offered an alternative.

I didnt mentioned about the fork, i didnt try it and if i want it, i'll get it. I've seen the changes, and props for whoever's work gets put into it.

Guess I didn't realize AUTOMATIC1111 was keeping such a tight leash on this repo until recently learning they hadn't shared approval duties with others - even those who have put in lots of work here and shown themselves to be responsible.

That's definitely their wont and I'll always have great respect for what this repo has accomplished. But forking off is natural when fervent minds have ideas to build upon and nagging problems to fix, of course.

Thanks AUTOMATIC1111, whether you come back or not. I'm glad this repo did what it has, whether it grows further or not, and also appreciate where vladmandic and others will take things. SD grew quickly in the public sphere because of intense sharing and building on different ideas without egos getting in the way, so continuing in that mode seems entirely natural.

the repo is alive, you are just looking at the wrong branch. but of course, when Auto approves changes directly to master Auto=bad, and when it doesn't Auto=bad, too.

@zethfox sorry, not true. both xformers and sdp can work in non-detministic and deterministic mode - and both of those are supported. and performance does differ - which is is a longer topic and i've written about it in details many times (it depends on gpu/cpu combo which is better).

Can you link me one of the articles you've written on it, I would love to read it... Every single piece of information I've read on xformers states that it's non-deterministic.
And I have read that SDP can be made non-deterministic depending on what else you're using. But I've never read that xformers can be made determinalistic. It wouldn't surprise me if there's even more conflicting information as every single day someone releases a paper, a blog post, or a video that directly conflicts with everyone else's information.

Edit to specify:
This isn't something that I'm just blindly following the herd either... This was my experience as well both with my 2080 TI and my 4090... Not once have I ever been able to produce the same image exactly the same, twice, using xformers... And I've specifically pulled away from XFormers to sdp as a 100% of the time I'm able to reproduce the exact same image.
So my personal experience with both of those lines up with everything I'm reading about xformers not being deterministic.

I don't know what happened in the last update of xformers, but now it's also deterministic. It doesn't change when using the same prompt and the same seed.

I don't know about you but I am missing LOTS and LOTS of models in the dropdown. Like, two thirds of them (I have 50+ on three different drives).

The ones missing are the CKPT models. Even though I have enabled them in settings.
