Trajectory: Agent Swarm Visualization Suite - Complete Build

Status: ✅ Completed Confidence: 90% Started: January 30, 2026 at 09:29 AM Completed: January 30, 2026 at 09:30 AM

Summary

Built complete Agent Swarm Visualization Suite with 12 agents across 3 waves over 7.5 hours. Two apps: swarm-viz (6 pattern animations) and relay-timeline (message visualization with animated particle flow). 1,709 messages exchanged. Tech stack decided through agent debate: SvelteKit + TypeScript + Tailwind + Canvas.

Approach: Wave-based agent deployment: Wave 1 for tech decisions (4 agents debated), Wave 2 for swarm patterns (3 specialist agents), Wave 3 for timeline visualization (4 role-based agents). Used relay protocol for real-time coordination. Documented issues and recommended protocol improvements.

Key Decisions

Use Agent Relay Protocol for inter-agent communication

  • Chose: Use Agent Relay Protocol for inter-agent communication
  • Rejected: Direct messaging, Shared database, File-based coordination
  • Reasoning: The relay protocol enables real-time messaging between autonomous agents with sub-5ms latency, message persistence, and auto-spawning capabilities. This was the core requirement from the original prompt.

Spawn 4-agent team for technology selection: Architect, UI-Agent, Backend-Agent, DevOps-Agent

  • Chose: Spawn 4-agent team for technology selection: Architect, UI-Agent, Backend-Agent, DevOps-Agent
  • Rejected: Single agent decides all, 2-agent pair, 6+ agent committee
  • Reasoning: Separated concerns across specialized agents to get diverse perspectives on technology choices. Each agent has domain expertise: Architect for system design, UI-Agent for frontend, Backend-Agent for API/coordination, DevOps-Agent for build/deploy.

SvelteKit as frontend framework (unanimous 4-0 vote)

  • Chose: SvelteKit as frontend framework (unanimous 4-0 vote)
  • Rejected: React with Framer Motion, Vue.js, Vanilla JavaScript with D3
  • Reasoning: Architect proposed Svelte citing smaller bundle size (4kb vs 42kb), native reactivity without virtual DOM, and better animation performance. UI-Agent initially proposed React but changed position after DevOps-Agent noted Svelte is Vite-native. Backend-Agent facilitated consensus.

TypeScript for type safety across all applications

  • Chose: TypeScript for type safety across all applications
  • Rejected: Plain JavaScript, Flow types, JSDoc annotations only
  • Reasoning: TypeScript provides compile-time type checking, better IDE support, and self-documenting code. Essential for complex animation state management and message parsing.

HTML5 Canvas for 60fps swarm animations

  • Chose: HTML5 Canvas for 60fps swarm animations
  • Rejected: SVG with SMIL animations, CSS transforms, WebGL, Pixi.js
  • Reasoning: Canvas provides direct pixel manipulation with minimal overhead, essential for rendering 50+ agents at 60fps. SVG would create too many DOM nodes, CSS animations lack the fine-grained control needed for physics-based movement.

Tailwind CSS for styling

  • Chose: Tailwind CSS for styling
  • Rejected: Plain CSS, SCSS/Sass, Styled-components, CSS Modules
  • Reasoning: Tailwind provides utility-first CSS with excellent dark theme support and fast prototyping. No need for separate CSS files, works well with Svelte's scoped styles.

Implement 6 classic swarm algorithms: Boids, Hub-Spoke, Hierarchical, Mesh, Spiral, Consensus

  • Chose: Implement 6 classic swarm algorithms: Boids, Hub-Spoke, Hierarchical, Mesh, Spiral, Consensus
  • Rejected: Only Boids algorithm, Particle swarm optimization, Ant colony patterns, Random movement only
  • Reasoning: These patterns represent the fundamental approaches to multi-agent coordination: emergent behavior (Boids), centralized control (Hub-Spoke), hierarchical delegation (Tree), decentralized peer-to-peer (Mesh), artistic motion (Spiral), and collective decision-making (Consensus). Together they demonstrate the full spectrum of swarm intelligence techniques.

Monorepo structure with npm workspaces: apps/swarm-viz and apps/relay-timeline

  • Chose: Monorepo structure with npm workspaces: apps/swarm-viz and apps/relay-timeline
  • Rejected: Separate repositories, Single app with routes, Turborepo monorepo, Lerna monorepo
  • Reasoning: Both apps share the same tech stack (SvelteKit, TypeScript, Tailwind) and were built by the same agent swarm. npm workspaces provides simple dependency management without the overhead of tools like Turborepo or Lerna.
