so we could just use our institutional instance (and potentially other institutions have similar setups) without demanding "individual" open router accounts

Nice point,
Having a OPENROUTER_API_KEY environment variable could be also a solution (documentation coming).
Definitely nice to add make it compatible with OWUI as well.

It is not OWUI, but easily transportable.
