Forcing people to star the repo before seeing anything important is pretty annoying. And the stats aren't even that useful and pretty generic.

The calculation is based on the data provided by the GitHub API, but you are welcome to contribute to its improvement. Starring brings more people to the project and possibly new contributors, I agree it may be a little annoying but I don't see it as a big deal.
