Docker development image with Azure CLI + functions tools

Create a Docker development image with the Azure CLI and functions tools already installed.

Here's a non-working starter draft:

We already publish these images. They’re primarily for supporting VS Code devcontainers and VS/GitHub Codespaces but you should be able to use them by themselves.

@TsuyoshiUshio can we add them to the Docker Hub readmes like this one? https://hub.docker.com/_/microsoft-azure-functions-node . Also, do we include the azure cli as well?

@anthonychu not quite. These are runtime images with the Functions runtime installed.

I am requesting the tools for use cases like DevOps CI/CD/CR that contains the Azure CLI AND the func tooling. I had originally found and attempted to use the images above, but discovered they didn't have the Azure CLI necessary for running func azure functionapp publish... commands.

Can we also consider how to lighten these images, for DevOps and for engineers? Should reducing the size of the docker image be a separate issue?

Unfortunately this seems to not be true for all runtimes.
E.g. Python Containers seem to not include the cli (Host 2.0 and 3.0)

@anthonychu Any chance that you will publish a dedicated image containing the functions tools?
Using an image with >2GB, which actually contains the runtime, just to get the CLI for this service, seems more than inefficient to me.

AWS on the other hand provides an image containing their complete CLI, and that has a size of only ~300MB.

The linked docker images do not include .NET 5 SDK required to build dotnet-isolated functions

@stephen776 The .NET Isolated Core Tools image (mcr.microsoft.com/azure-functions/dotnet-isolated:3.0-dotnet-isolated5.0-core-tools) includes the .NET 5 SDK. However, it's missing the .NET Core 3.1 SDK that's also needed to build .NET Isolated apps. That's in this PR here that I'll need to follow up on: #426

@markusgulden How do you plan on using the CLI? The current images include language specific runtimes/SDKs because we want to support all commands, includes func start which runs (and sometimes builds) the app and requires the necessary SDKs to do that. We might be able to ship an image that only has the CLI and only some of the commands (like func azure functionapp publish would work).

Sorry, @anthonychu. Yes, you’re correct I’m missing the 3.1 SDK. I’ll keep an eye out for that PR

I managed to install azure-function-core-tools into running container of image mcr.microsoft.com/azure-cli with the following:

$ apk add npm nodejs gcompat
$ npm i -g azure-functions-core-tools@4 --unsafe-perm true

gcompat contains ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 required by azure-functions-core-tools and not contained in alpine

Alternatively azure-functions-core-tools can also be installed from zip, instead of npm package, see: https://github.com/Azure/azure-functions-core-tools#other-linux-distributions

hate to post on something old but it's open. I'm using dotnet-isolated:4-nightly-dotnet-isolated8.0 but i dont have access to azure cli or func in my container. I thought that'd be included but I am not seeing it.
