[1:1]: Unable to find a template property named $schema

Describe the bug
On running az bicep decompile --file main.json, it shows 'Decompilation failed with fatal error "[1:1]: Unable to find a template property named $schema."'

Can you share the ARM Template JSON you are providing?

It appears what you have there is a Resource Snippet, not a full ARM Template.

If you use VSCode, you can use the snippet to create the rest of the template.

new file, select language ARM Template...

@lipalath-ms Also were you happy with using ARM templates or were you looking for a Bicep conversion?

If you are building dashboards in the portal, then you can get the fully qualified resourceid for the dashboard and then in vscode use "bicep export" to take a Bicep snapshot of the dashboard that will allow you to redeploy it or modify and redeploy.

@brwilkinson this is what I see on selecting new file from Visual Studio Code:

confirmed to install Bicep extension in vscode.

1. install the bicep extension
2. create a new file of language bicep
3. press the command key in vs code and select insert bicep resource
4. select the file you created
5. paste in the resourceid of the dashboard
6. magic, it will insert the template in your file in bicep.

in this case, no need to convert or do anything with json

I have updated this thread to not answered, since I wanted to make sure you had more of a chance to test things out and confirm they are working okay. The dashboards can be difficult, given the complexity. So please keep us posted on your progress.
