I'm sure many of us appreciate the work that has gone into this module thus far, and we are using it in production. Of course I know we can just fork the module and carry on from there, but this is an Azure module so it makes sense to keep the upstream alive.

However, no PRs have been merged since beginning of September, and issues don't appear seem to get responses any more. I think @lonegunmanb isn't just a username - i think he literally is the lone gunman on this repo which probably doesn't help matters, and I can see from his Github profile that he is still active at Microsoft, so maybe reassigned.

But there are new AKS features like advanced networking and custom CA trust certs that have gone GA that should be a configurable part of this module now.

There is clearly still interest in this repo, indeed people are still creating issues and PRs even this week, so is it possible to get an honest status update please? It would be a shame to see this module go to waste.

I sincerely apologize for the late reply and kindly ask for your understanding. We are living in turbulent times where everything is changing drastically, and few are fortunate enough to be immune to these shifts.

Four years ago, I took over the maintenance of several Terraform modules under the Azure GitHub organization. To be honest, their condition back then was far from great, and I am certainly not a superhero like @antonbabenko. Fortunately, Microsoft gave me enough time and patience to learn from the best in the community and figure out the right way forward.

However, the capacity of a single person is ultimately limited. Luckily, Microsoft later introduced Azure Verified Modules (AVM). The concepts and standards behind AVM are far superior to what I could achieve on my own. Consequently, I gradually started to deprecate the older modules—they were simply too old to seamlessly migrate to the AVM standard without introducing massive breaking changes.

Today, after nearly three years of close collaboration with the AVM core team, it is highly likely that I will no longer be able to continue maintaining these Terraform modules—whether it's this AKS module (which we called a Terraform Verified Module) or other AVM modules.

We have an old saying in China: "There is no never-ending banquet" (All good things must come to an end). I know exactly how critical AKS infrastructure is to our users, which is why I tried my absolute best to keep maintaining it up until now, but realistically, I most likely won't be able to continue doing so this year.

It is time to let this old pal rest. I kindly ask users to migrate to the corresponding AVM module.

Thank you so much to the community and to everyone for your support over the years. If my limited capabilities ever caused you any trouble in the past, I am truly sorry. I just hope that the help this module provided outweighed the headaches it might have caused. What I am doing these days is, solving as many issues and pending prs as I can, then release the final version, and declare this module as deprecated.

The primary maintainers of this module have been me and @zioproto. He is no longer at Microsoft, and I might be leaving soon as well. It has been a truly fun ride. Wishing you all the best and smooth sailing ahead. I consider myself incredibly lucky that, along the way, everyone I’ve crossed paths with has been a friend or a mentor to me.
