Cannot get .yaml install to complete

After adoption in home assistant, esphome builder, install just freezes at this point.

I'm having this same issue. Except, I am on 2025.7.4 and I see the following log in the ESP Home Builder logs:

 INFO Process exited with return code -9

Could this maybe be caused by not changing the external_media_player variable? I don't want to use an external media player, but when I tried commenting it out, it complained about it not being defined. So, I left it as it's default since there are no instructions on how to set it up without the external media player, but then it just fails to complete and the logs give no indication as to why.

@kicker10BOG could you post your compile log please.

What hardware are you running ESPHome on and how much RAM does it have ? also how is ESPHome installed? eg. HA Add-on , Docker, etc

The issue won't have anything to do with external media player, as ESPHome doesn't know if the defined entity exists or not and just sends commands to it. If you are not using an external media player, you can leave the substitution unchanged and just don't enable the feature in the settings.

It's running as a Home Assistant Add-On on a GMKtec N100 mini PC with 8GB of RAM.

I installed the firmware using the web installer at https://support.bbdl.co.uk/installer.html onto the ESP32 S3 Box3..

you should have a card showing in the ESPHome dashboard (device Builder) for the S3 Box 3 , If you click 'edit' and then paste the entire config from the following link, (overwriting the current contents) https://github.com/BigBobbas/ESP32-S3-Box3-Custom-ESPHome/blob/dev/s3b.yaml and then click 'save' followed by install. and 'wirelessly' and see how that goes. I will check the installer with the version of ESPHome you are running to see if anything has broken with recent ESPHome update but as far as I am aware it should be ok. Cheers

Before trying that, I rebooted the machine and gave it another try because I noticed quite high resource usage, This time, I got some more helpful logs.

I had tried what you suggested before and it complained about the wifi qr code.

So, I tried again after commenting out all of the qr code lines and pages.

It appears to be an issue with git. This is the error in both attempts that made it past just a syntax check.

thanks for the update, I have just compiled without any errors. Can you try uninstalling the ESPHome device builder add-on, restart HA and then install again. It looks to be most likely an issue with the installation.
Any configs that you have in the 'dashboard' will remain when uninstalling as the directory they are saved in does not get removed.
After a re-install give it another go and let me know how you get on 👍

That fixed the install. Thanks again! It's not responding to commands yet, but I'll get that working later. It actually worked great for me a year or two ago, shortly after the initial launch, but then it started too quickly selecting a command, sometimes before I even tried to say it. That's not the ESP32 code though, I'm pretty sure of that. I think it is probably a setting in vosk or something. Yes, I'm using Vosk because I want custom commands like "nox" and "lumos" in different parts of the house. That was the dream anyways. And my speech isn't great, so having a limited number of commands it could listen for seemed to help until that issue arose.
