alphaBlend JPG, PNG or Sprites

This is an incredible library. I have been building my UI for the past few weeks and am impressed with the functionality.

As part of my project, I am drawing white text over a photo (currently a JPG in a sprite). I would like to drop the alpha channel on the photo, effectively darkening it. Is there an example that uses the alphaBlend on a JPG, PNG, or even a sprite?
