Having a problem enabling 16 button controller

If this was already address somewhere I apologize I didn't see it anywhere. I have a box built and from the wiring it looked like is supported 16 switches, so I went w/ that. I have it wired into the esp32-s3 which I flashed with version 2.0.1.2. I connect to the Esp32 w/ my phone and bring up the webpage, the switches are 4 banks of 4, so I'm not sure what to select, do it only support 2 rows or 4? Also do I need to configure each switch or is there a default setting? I'm so close to getting working but stuck on this part. Thanks for the help!

Hi. In the web config, there are 2 similar menus. "Int" for internal/onboard footswitches (ones directly connected to input pins on the board), and "Ext" for external/ones connected via the option SX1509 IO expander.

In each of these, there is an option for the footswitch mode. The Int ones support 4 max, and the Ext ones support 16 max.
So in your case, if using the SX1509 expander for 16 switches, you would be changing the setting in the Ext page.

The first number in the description is the number of rows, and the second number is the number of switches per row.
And then A options use 2 footswitches at once to change banks, and B options use dedicated bank up/down buttons.

Now I've just realised, the maximum number of external footswitches total is 16, but only 12 of those can currently be used for preset switching, with the other 4 being for effect switching.
Did you really want all 16 for preset switching? I can pretty easily update the code if needed.

Thanks for the quick reply. So if I have it built with 4 rows of 4 would I pick 2x6b? Also, if I just want each switch to select a different preset in numerical order 1,2,3 etc do I need to go into each and set up a value? I went w/ 16 switches because when I was building it I saw the comment that the i/o chip supported that many so I figured why not. But since Tonex one has 20 presets I'm not sure how I'd configure 16 switches, I guess 2 banks of 10 switches plus a bank up and down, maybe something to change between modes as well? Also, I have a GP-5 to play with as well, so I guess more switches makes more sense for that since it has more presets. What else do I need to do to use the controller w/ the gp5? Thanks!

4x4 isn't currently supported for just presets, but yeah I can add it if needed.
At the moment probably 2x4 would be closest, leaving the other 8 switches for effects.
You don't need to set any specific values for the preset switches. The single setting e.g. 2x5B is the only thing needed to set to cover those switches.
Other switches that are used for effects would need to be individually configured.

For the GP5, the only thing needed is to run the latest beta firmware. It's fully supported in that one. Nothing else needed.

I tired a few different settings and none seem to work, I think all of my connections are good and correct. What would you suggest to help debug it?

First thing to check is the below jumpers. This is critical.

Which platform are you using?
In terms of debug, probably the best option would be for me to give you a special version with the USB host disabled. This means that the Tonex pedal won't work, but it allows a PC to view the debug log, which will show whether the SX1509 was detected or not.

To create this debug build I need to know which platform you are using.

It was the board from the pictures you shared, I had a guy that repairs amps and other stuff put it together because I thought I would mess up the board trying to solder it. I think he screwed up the part where you have to cut it and link the pads from how it looks.

I went back to shop and he checked the io board w/ a meter and thinks he cut the pads correctly and soldered everything correctly. Any configuration I try though none of the buttons work. So I guess when/if you have time pls create something I can use to troubleshoot the issue. Thanks!

Which platform are you using? E.g. 4.3B, Waveshare Zero, 1.69" etc.
I need to know so I can create a special release for you.

I might also be worth sharing some pictures of the wiring at both ends. Maybe I can spot something from that.

Pics below, hopefully we can solve this. How can I test it w/ a meter to make sure io board is getting power etc, maybe that would help to see if it's getting power. For the connections to the Esp32-s3 he matched your colors on all but 1 wire. I think everything is connected from the controller to the Esp32-s3 correctly and it's flashed correctly because I'm able to connect to it w/ a phone and pull up the config webpage. Here is the test/debug build. This one disabled USB host support, so pedals won't work, and instead the debug logs can be captured.
The procedure to do this is covered in the below link, but in your case you don't need the serial adaptor device or any additional wiring. You can skip straight to "TeraTerm" section.

The part of the logs that we need to check are the parts that mention the "SX1509". Below is what is shown when the board is not detected. If it is detected, it will report success.

With the photos, nothing stands out, but it is not easy to see where all the wires go. Especially the connection below, being a black wire.
I think we should do the debug log test first. If it shows the SX1509 is detected, but no footswitches work, then we can look more carefully in this area.
If the SX1509 is not detected, then its something in the area of the 4 wires between the 4.3B and the SX1509, or the jumpers on the back.

So flash w/ version you provided, do I load to same addresses as prior version? Then I connect w/ usb to pc, what host do I choose in Teraterm?

Yes load to the normal addresses.

In Teraterm, select Serial, and pick the Port that matches the ESP32. If you are not sure which one it is, disconnect and the ESP32, restart Teraterm and check the port list, then connect the ESP32 and repeat and see which one is added.
