All society members are eligible to run for a role on the committee. The elections run throughout this week and next week. Those who want to run for a position can nominate themselves on the [Guild website](https://guildofstudents.com/vote), until Friday 24th April, 4pm. The nominated members are then voted in between 12pm on Monday 27th and 4pm on Wednesday 27th April. Voting will also take place on the Guild website.

Although we, as committee members, all work together in one big team, each role also has its own individual responsibilities - from taking care of the finances, to publicising all of the events. Being a committee member takes a lot of time and effort, but I would say it is definitely worth the outcome. The society, committee and our elections are governed by our Constitution, which you can read in full [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J3_EWs3dd2gq5T_xYylcP5pDzm0HHAYCTgiqKUYwkls/edit).

At an earlier stage of your career, many recruiters may not expect you to have much industry expereince, if any at all. This is why it's so important to work on projects which you can show off to prove that you have the right skills for the job.

Competitions and hackathons are creative marathons where you have a set time period to invent and create a project. They are often run by companies who are looking for individuals to recruit. Student hackathons are also a great opportunity to create projects, where you have more freedom to make anything you want. Organisations like MLH (Major League Hacking) partner with and support many hackathons like this around the world, and you can find a list of upcoming events [here](https://mlh.io/seasons/2021/events).

You can also create your own experiences. Take part in opportunities available to you. For example, you can help us (CSS) to run events. Our DSC group is a good way to run your own workshops, which can improve not only your technical skills, but also your soft skills like public speaking and communication. Why not work on your own software as well? If you like playing games, then you can create your own video games. Other societies within the School, like Games Development Society, are perfect for this. Look our for their Game Jams.

That covers everything that the outgoing committee of 2020-2021 helped organise. We’ve counted 44 events this year and that's in a pandemic! Hopefully you’ve enjoyed being a part of CSS this year - if you have, please consider nominating us for the EPS Awards! The EPS awards help recognise the efforts of not only us volunteers on the CSS committee, but all student groups in EPS. If you enjoyed a particular event, or someone has been a real stand-out committee member, go ahead and nominate it! The link to nominate is [here](https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/university/colleges/eps/eps-community/students/societies-awards/nominate.aspx)!
