Optional ability to display preview content on index

I want to build in the capability to display a couple lines of text as a post preview shown in the index with other posts (probably delimited with a comment like <!-- More --> marking the end of preview text). It would have a link at the bottom displayed that allows for the user to click to open the post. The link would say Read More... or simply More...
