How about a new app icon? ;-)

Hello there!
I recently discovered this app and I really like it. Very easy to use, yet with all the features that I need.
That said, I feel that after four years, the app icon could use a fresh look.
I played around with some ideas and I came up with two designs. I would love to hear what you think.

Do you like the idea of a new app icon? If so, do you have a favorite between the two versions?
Happy to finalize (*) one of the two designs, or explore other design directions too.

(*) I still have to fine tune details such as colors, shades, grid alignment, etc.

While the app icon is definitely somewhat old, I don't think it necessarily ages. It definitely still fits current (flat) design trends. I do think it could maybe use some colour tweaks (the contrast between front and back feels a bit odd to me), but otherwise it's fine in my eyes (it even supports Android 14 "Themed icons").

Both of your icons look pretty cool, although version A definitely looks a bit "dated" due to the glossy look (it's a good look in my eyes, but very different from most modern icons). Then again, with Apple just launching their whole Liquid Glass thing, maybe that'll be in fashion soon again. Version B looks very clean and professional, but I think it looks less friendly than the current icon because it's so dark.

At the end of the day, icon design is very personal I think. But of all the things people complain about, I've never heard anyone be negative about the icon before, so I think general community consensus is good about it (and it's very unique and therefore recognizable). I also think changing the icon is very disruptive to existing users (they'll have trouble recognizing the app) and harms brand recognition, so I'm generally hesitant to change things like that :)

But idk, maybe other people disagree! :)

I'm completely fine with your most recent version @il-Luca and don't see anything personally that would require changing anymore :) Of course I'm always open to community suggestions but for me personally it looks great :)

@TheLastProject I am ready to provide the assets for the icon but I want to check with you how to proceed.

1. These below are the files I believe need to be updated. Anything I forgot? (see also question 2 and 3)

• app/src/main/res/drawable/ic_launcher_foreground.xml
• app/src/main/res/drawable/ic_launcher_monochrome.xml
• app/src/main/res/values/ic_launcher_background.xml
• app/src/main/ic_launcher-playstore.png
• fastlane/metadata/android/en-US/images/icon.png
• logo.svg

2. Are all the PNGs under /app/src/main/res/mipmap-*** still needed or the VectorDrawables listed above are enough? If they are needed, do we need both square and round version?

3. Do you want me to update the feature graphic (.scripts/generate_feature_graphic/featureGraphic.svg) and the script to generate it (.scripts/generate_feature_graphic/generate_feature_graphic.sh)? With the new version of the Play Store I don't know if this is still needed or not

4. Do you want me to make a pull request or to simply share the assets here? I don't have Android Studio and I'm not a developer, so I won't be able to test things before submitting

5. I will also provide the design files of the icon (normal and monochrome) so that they can be used for future iterations or to generate additional assets. Where should I put them? I was thinking about a .designs folder where we could also move the logo.svg file

I'll be honest, I just used "Android Image Asset Studio" last time: https://developer.android.com/studio/write/create-app-icons

I definitely think 2) is still needed for older Android versions (and Catima supports all the way back to Android 5).

The script in 3) probably shouldn't need changes? But the svg definitely would need changes to generate the new feature graphic.

4. Whatever you prefer, feel free to upload here (or make a MR with just #5), then I can try to have Android Studio autogenerate all versions

5. Having the originals would be awesome! Makes the future a lot more flexible :)

Because adaptive icons are only used on API 26+, you can rely on certain features being available to you. Specifically pretty capable VectorDrawable support.

API 26 is Android 8, so that seems like we will need them still. But Android Studio should be able to autogenerate those from the SVGs anyway, so no big deal :)
