Welcome to the November edition of This Month in Forest! This month's update is brief due to the entire team's attendance at the Filecoin Dev Summit and Devconnect in Buenos Aires. That said, we still have some exciting updates to share with you!

Filecoin Dev Summit in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷

The team attended the Filecoin Dev Summit and Devconnect in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was packed with productive discussions and networking opportunities. We had the chance to meet with other Filecoin ecosystem members and align on future developments.

Some key takeaways from the event from the Forest perspective:

• Forest is to focus on RPC layer correctness, performance, and stability improvements, especially given that Lotus maintainers are now focusing on the Filecoin Onchain Cloud. Make sure to check out their Filecoin Pin demo on calibnet here.
• ChainSafe is to onboard a miner to the calibration network to help stabilize it, see this thread for more details.
• Forest team will continue co-maintaining and improving base camp libraries ref-fvm and builtin-actors alongside other ecosystem members.
• Forest should publish reports on RPC performance, conformance, and other metrics to help the ecosystem track client health and make informed decisions. Probably alongside This Month in Forest.
• Making sure Forest works well as an archival node (mainnet) is important for the ecosystem. Switching to Forest could introduce massive savings for archival node operators.
• Forest should explore what parts of the codebase can be shared with other Filecoin clients to reduce maintenance burden across the ecosystem.

Random improvements and fixes

Some fixes related to syncing and RPC stability were made at the beginning of the month. This included a fix around a time-traveling block that was causing the node to get stuck during sync and requiring a restart. We intend to introduce a self-healing mechanism for such scenarios in the future.
