Testing cross client devnet

This discussion is meant to gather ideas to test gossamer against polkadot.

• I am thinking that we can come up with testing scenarios and then either test them manually or write test to keep on testing them automatically.
• We can add to this list of scenarios.
• After trying out scenarios, if we see some suspicious logs, we can post them here, which may result into issues.
• This could also be a place to discuss automated cross-client tests

Scenarios

• one gossamer node, many substrate nodes (This is the scenario we are most interested in)
• one polkadot node, one gossamer node
• one polkadot node, two gossamer node
• both as authority nodes
• only polkadot as authority node
• only gossamer as authority node

Running devnet

• to create genesis-spec.json
  ./polkadot build-spec --disable-default-bootnode --dev > genesis-spec.json

• edit genesis-spec.json as per your needs. Add extra authorities if you want to.

• create genesis.json from genesis-spec.json.
  ./polkadot build-spec --chain genesis-spec.json --raw --disable-default-bootnode > genesis.json

• initiate gossamer node
  ./bin/gossamer init --force --genesis ../polkadot-testing/genesis.json

• run polkadot
  ./polkadot --alice --chain genesis.json

• run gossamer
  ./bin/gossamer --key bob --bootnodes /ip4/127.0.0.1/tcp/30333/p2p/12D3KooWKFFJcY3rymuRzi8JTt8cdXT9BtSYrggwwMqyzW7c6W6P

Suspicious

• Two node cross-client devnet
  This one seems to happen regularly with most versions of polkadot
