Task: Refactor some of the error catching exceptions across the pipeline

Many of the exceptions in the pipeline lack specificity in the exceptions they are raising, which could be improved for debugging purposes. Not something pressing, but would be worthwhile to take a general look across to see where some raise Exception as e ... lines can be given some more context-specific information.
