Some integers are unintentionally 32-bit on Windows

The library currently uses long in various places, which on Windows is only 32-bit. This can cause problems e.g. when dates are after the year 2038.

We are currently investigating the best way forward for solving this while still maintaining cross-platform support. Potential solutions include moving to preprocessor macros or using type aliases.
