In order for RR to support this image format, it needs to be supported here:

More like 30%. It makes sense that HEIC is not a priority since it's not RAW, what you can do is probably convert them to a supported format.

Thanks for finding that July 13, 2025 comment. I searched for "HEIF", but only under open tickets.

Very unfortunate, since it seems like half the planet has an iPhone, but I understand that it is not a priority right now. I will have to shelve RapidRAW for now, until this file format is added.

If "the planet" for you is the USA, then yes, iOS has 61% market share. Elsewhere, iOS is - like @strokesws said - 29-30%.

Okay, for those who are mildly allergic to hyperbole, if 27% of the 4.6 billion global smartphone market is iOS, then that would mean over 1 billion people would potentially love it if RapidRAW supported the HEIC format.
Or to re-frame: It would be lovely if RapidRAW would support popular image formats as well as RAW formats, so folks can adjust the key values of any image in their collections.
As quoted above, @CyberTimon has decided to pass on this, as of July 2025, to focus on other priorities. Seems clear to me..

Hey all - just to follow up: I haven't forgotten about this. I recently spent another 3-4 hours trying to get it to build properly, but the fundamental issue remains. Until there's a native Rust HEIF/HEIC/AVIF decoder, this is too complicated to build reliably across all supported OSes. The C/C++ dependencies involved are a cross-platform maintenance headache I can't justify taking on right now.

Still open to a PR if someone finds a clean solution. For now, converting HEIC to JPEG/TIFF/PNG before importing is the best workaround.
