Can Wikibase be used as an alternative to Virtuoso?

Following up on a 26 May 2025 conversation with @kyrieb-ekat and @mailynmailyn about using Wikibase for data management. They are looking into using it for UMIL, but could it be used for LinkedMusic? I suspect that LinkedMusic might be prohibitively large for this approach, but maybe it could be a possibility? Will revisit once Kyrie is more familiar with it (in the context of UMIL).

Update: Following 29 May 2025 meeting, Kyrie will build a simple prototype UI for reviewing user edits using Wikibase, and Mai Lyn will do the same using Django. We will see which is easier to build and go from there.

it 100% would! and very flexible for it too, and scales up very well for larger tests. Current cloud version would handle this nicely- same oath system we have currently wouldn't be too difficult to hook up.

Do you know does it use the same authentication backend as actual Wikidata? If so, that would be a really great thing to have!

I feel like it would just require changing the Wikidata OAuth url to our Wikibase ? Am finishing up the UI for data entry, so will discuss with Kyrie about setting up testing on Wikibase tomorrow !

My current understanding is that it ought- all I'd need to do was make sure the OAth extension is set up (it should come out of the box, but otherwise is only a couple added lines to LocalSettings)and then an oath consumer would be needed to set up to link with what we currently have on UMIL. Otherwise the only changes would need to be on wikibase's end, not UMILs.

I think all Mai Lyn would need to change would be to use http://localhost:8181/wiki/Special:OAuth instead of meta.wikimedia.org as an endpoint? I think?

I'll look into getting the wikibase switched over from local only too, which would make things easier.
