@hannes-ucsc: "I am aware of at least one unnecessary use of the requests library: the health checks. The only valid reason to use that library is for requests signed with Amazon's HMAC algo. All other usages should be relplaced with our http_client. Spike to enumerate all uses of the library, valid or not. Assignee to start work on PR removing all invalid uses."
