Control AC via MQTT

I wired up my AC with an ESP8266, and home assistant works perfectly (except for a connectivity loss - different problem). i would like to controll it with mqtt, but did not find a way to turn on the ac, or choose the mode. I can control swing mode and the nanoex switch, but the more basic settings seem to lack mqtt control options.
Is that really so, or am I missing something? Does anybody have any pointers? Thanks!
