@sformel I'm not entirely sure what your looking for, but I can share an example that might be helpful.

We have an ATN dataset that has a PID, also references a collection with a PID (DOI), and references another version of the data with a PID (DOI).

PID at NCEI - gov.noaa.nodc:0282699
Collection PID (DOI) - https://doi.org/10.25921/wp4e-ph20
PID (DOI) to the data hosted on another platform - https://doi.org/10.24431/rw1k6c3 (for some reason the DataOne landing page is busted today)

In the NCEI dataset landing page, they provide linkages to all these associated resources (and similarly at DataOne but the site isn't working to show):

Once we publish the synthesized data to OBIS/GBIF, there will be more PIDs. which can then be connected via metadata.

At the end of the day, I think metadata is the system by which folks can manage PIDs. I'd love to hear of something else that can manage all of the connections. Probably linked data folks would have a solution of sorts...
