Create a clear location + pathway to start with ESMValTool for new users in the main menu. This would ideally contain any information related to getting started (e.g. downloading ESMValTool, links to documentation and tutorials).

1. Rename main header menu item 'DOWNLOAD' to 'GET STARTED'.
2. Create 'Download' button item in 'GET STARTED' submenu
3. Move 'Tutorials' button item from 'ESMVALTOOL' submenu to 'GET STARTED' submenu.
4. Move 'Documentation' button from 'ESMVALTOOL' submenu to 'GET STARTED' submenu.

Based on @ehogan 's suggestions: This new 'GET STARTED' submenu can also include a dedicated 'Quick-start guide' (or similarly named) page that can give some very initial directions to new users on where to go next based on their needs.

The "ESMValTool" category feels a bit confusing to me too.
Instead I'd suggest a direct link to the docs and/or the tutorial in the header (with indication icon that this are external sites). This would be consistent with the headers in the tool and core documentation. The tutorial could maybe changed in the same way.
Having a GET STARTED section or single page on the website sounds good, but I'd try to keep all texts as brief as possible and just link to corresponding pages on GH/docs/tutorial to avoid to many places of information.

This sounds like something we could discuss and maybe change during the up coming workshop.

Tutorial and documentation are top level navigation entries now and the "Download" button links to GH and the Getting Started section in the docs. Some additional ressources are listed under community/ressources. This maybe solves the issue (at least partly).
