esmvalcore development version is starting to be incompatible

Changes done to config in ESMValCore/main devel, and more to come, are all backwards incompatible, and are starting to make the development tests fail, eg https://github.com/ESMValGroup/ESMValTool/actions/runs/19415362544/job/55542823964 - @bouweandela I reckon we can either ignore those fails (given there is no impending release, that needs all tests to pass), or I can turn off the GHA workflow for now. 🍺
