tl;dr: OGA-BY is like CC-BY without the DRM clause. Should we dual license?
I just read through the Open Game Art FAQ as I think about publishing some of the RTP work their for publicity.
Then I read something surprising: The CC-BY license has a Anti-DRM clause. Honestly I didn't knew this as I always thought the license is just "Attribution required".
The OGA FAQ states about CC-BY:
You may not impose any additional restrictions on the redistribution of the work. In practice, this means the work may not be not used on distribution networks that use some form of Digital Rights Management (DRM).
Note that many game distribution networks do use DRM (ie. Apple iOS, Xbox Live, Sony PSN) and others may or may not use DRM depending on how a developer chooses to package a particular game (ex. Steam, Google Android).
Maybe all others who agreed on CC-BY knew about this when we agreed on that license but for me that sounds like an annoying restriction. This would e.g. prevent distribution an EasyRPG Editor on iOS later (or at least almost useless as the assets are missing -_-).
CC0 is fine and some assets are already under OGA-BY.
Authors that contributed assets under CC-BY only:
- Weapon.png: russidan (Alephman)
- Actor1.png, People3.png: Marina Navarro Travesset(base) (Actor1.png)
- People3.png: R.C.O
- Game Over.png: Contains CC-BY koubit font by kou
- Most of the Music: Juan Manuel Nigretti
- Agreed: Most of the Sound: @lumiscosity
- Agreed: Far too many characters: VictorSena
(I'm ignoring the Chipset/retro* assets here as they are just a bonus and have too many Authors).
