Feedback from MLZ (German Neutron Source) User Meeting 2025 #341

Description

@kara-mela

I had a poster at the MLZ User Meeting recently and asked the people to complement the "sub-graph" of neutron techniques in PaNET by adding sticky notes.

I had an overwhelming amount of 30 comments, which I want to share with you. This is mostly for your information, without any direct action imposed. I try to group the comments for a better overview

New techniques

  • scanning positron microscopy
  • GISANS = gracing incidence small angle neutron scattering
  • half-polarized diffraction (purpose: magnetic susceptibility)
  • neutron imaging
    • neutron tomography
    • add relationship to high-resolution neutron imaging
    • neutron diffraction tomography
  • TOF neutron diffraction
  • neutron Laue diffraction; x-ray Laue diffraction; investigate the actual definitions for x-ray and neutrons, for neutron supposedly a white beam technique
  • total neutron diffraction (purpose: determine magnetic structure)
    • PDF (pair distribution function) for powder samples
    • Δ-PDF for single crystals
  • time-resolved ...
    • imaging
    • ...
  • LARMOR, mainly for single crystals; niche topic for powder samples
    • LARMOR diffraction (high angular resolution)
  • MIEZE; subclass of spin echo, TOF; purpose: magnetism
  • hot neutron single crystal diffraction
  • neutron activation analysis
  • diffuse neutron scattering
  • neutron spectroscopy
    • triple axis neutron spectroscopy
  • spherical neutron polarimetry
  • quasi-monochromatic beam (for neutrons) = pink beam (for x-rays)
  • transmutation as subclass of manufacturing
    • subclass: neutron activation analysis
    • subclass: prompt gamma activation analysis
  • pulsed vs continuous source; pulsed beam can also be produced by continuous source plus chopper

New energies

  • hot neutrons; part of epithermal neutrons
  • fusion neutrons; purpose: testing material for fusion power
  • ultra cold neutrons

Updating Information

  • rename spin echo scattering to spin echo spectroscopy
  • pulsed neutron TOF is unconnected to other TOF techniques
  • neutron powder diffraction unconnected; connect to subclass: high resolution thermal neutron powder diffraction
  • spin echo:
    • add relationship to SANS
    • subclass of cold neutron spectrosocpy

Misc

  • include particle physics: neutron/antineutron and positron research
  • coherence is property of a probe; elasticity is part of scattering; consult HERCULES books
  • XFEL vs synchrotron research: same technique, but different nature of information
  • neutron imaging is not part of neutron scattering, everything else is
