npm ERR! ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'distutils'

After cloning the repo onto a brand new ubuntu 24.04.1 system, I tried to run npm install (on the develop branch: 70acf75), but get the following error:

npm error ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'distutils'
npm error gyp ERR! configure error 
...

The ModuleNotFoundError is actually a Python error. What is going on here, and how to fix this?

After making sure Python's pip and setuptools were installed, I now get another error:

npm error gyp ERR! build error 
npm error gyp ERR! stack Error: `make` failed with exit code: 2
...
npm error gyp ERR! cwd /home/me/Documents/fdp-client-fork/node_modules/node-sass
...

Installation appears to succeed when installing from package.json instead of package-lock.json.

The "solution" is to use the proper node version, i.e. node 16. Also see #150 (comment).
