The JsonNode class provides methods such as asInt, asLong, and isShort, but there is no asShort method available

It's bit of a slippery slope, but not completely unreasonable addition. Probably both

short asShort()
short asShort(short defaultValue)

One thing to note: 2.x implementation needs to be different from 3.0; big rewrite for latter (to add bounds checks).
