Bug description

GitHub has updated their brand for 2026. As part of this their primary logo pictogram (Invertocat) has been changed.

To maintain compliance with GitHub's 2026 brand refresh the Font Awesome GitHub icons should be updated.

GitHub has released a brand refresh for 2026, this includes an update to the primary "Invertocat" pictogram. To ensure compliance with these new guidelines, the Font Awesome GitHub brand icons require updating.

github, square-github : Needs Update

Font Awesome (v7.2.0) uses the deprecated 2012–2025 Invertocat with suction cups variant. The 2026+ refresh streamlines the silhouette. The circle, ears, head shape, and tentacle curvature have been adjusted.

Font Awesome (v7.2.0) (2012–2025):

github-alt : Uncertain

Font Awesome 7.2.0 GitHub Alt

The github-alt icon is not in the 2026 brand toolkit, nor is it explicitly listed as deprecated.

Maybe it is fine, though I would assume not? I am not a GitHub Brand employee and cannot speak on their behalf. Similarly, I don't know the Font Awesome team's stance regarding the strictness of brand fidelity for the Brand Icons package.

Maybe the official GitHub Wordmark or the Mona Mascot might serve as suitable alternatives? Though those may be too far of a departure from existing github-alt icon. Not my place to say.

I am filing this as an issue, because it does not meet the Discussions "Request checklist": "The brand is not already available in Font Awesome."

This is an issue with an existing brand icon no longer matching brand standards. It is a replacement of an outdated icon, not a "new brand or product logo."

Web bug report checklist

  • I have included a test case because my odds go way up that the team can fix this when I do
  • I have searched for existing issues and to the best of my knowledge this is not a duplicate
