Allows users to switch between checkmark and numbered selection, enabling the users to track the order of selected items

Many platforms preserve the order of items based on the user selection

How about displaying the number for a brief moment when some item is selected?

The preinstalled Gallery app in Xiaomi devices does this.

That approach works as long as the selection order is tracked and preserved. If briefly displaying numbers ensures that, then I think it should be fine.
