Implement coding best practices for this repo: Code scanning issues #14

Hi,
When running codeql scan for this repo, I found some potential areas of improvement. Some of the issues mentioned should be patched. They need not be security vulnerabilities but rather best practices. This repo being out of date for the last 12 years should be updated shall it is being used in other projects.
