How can I keep map layer metadata in sync with dataset metadata?

I created a map and added a dataset from the catalogue, then saved the map. Later, I updated the dataset's metadata (changed the title) in the catalogue. The updated metadata shows correctly on the dataset itself, but the map still shows the old title in the layers list in the table of contents.

Is this expected behavior?
Is there a way to re-sync the map layer metadata with the updated dataset metadata?
