Linux or windows?

Should I be running this on Linux or windows. if Linux what is the best one to run to have the most success for Slinger? I currently have a Debian 13 machine running and I had a lot of issues getting it setup and now most of the bugs seem to be worked out I have frequent streaming drops. If I move back to my windows machine I don't have the drops. Same config.ini. But I don't want it on my windows machine as it is my primary desktop. I don't mind installing windows on the machine I am gping to run slinger on but I know that Linux has a lot less overhead and should be better suited to run this.

Just an FYI and I don't understand why I'm having so many issues with Linux. I have tried 2 different machines and one vm with Debian 13 installed. One machine with no gui. All had the same issue with dropping connections. My initial tests of Slinger were on my windows 11 desktop no dropping issues. So now I have gone to another windows machine, same make, model, cpu and ram as the debian 13 without gui box. No dropping connections on Windows. I was attemping to go to Linux as I wanted to make sure I had the least issues with software overhead. But Linux is a no go I guess.

I'm sorry you're having issues with Linux. But I can't tell you why. I've had great success with Linux and it's my main server runs 24/7 with no drops. So two questions,

1. Is it the connection to the Slingbox that is dropping or connections to the box running Slinger
2. Are you using WiFi? If you are I'd suggest using a wired connection to your router.

So my setup was a debian 13 clean install (2 different machines one with a gui and one without)
Currently 2 slingbox 500s.
One is wired and one is wireless.
Same issue using either, dropped streams. They would restart. Sometimes they would work for 1 minute, sometimes 3 minutes, sometimes 30 seconds.
Switched to a windows 11 setup. Same config.ini. Same make, make, model, cpu and ram as one of the debian 13 boxes. No issues at all running 5 streams. 2 from outside my network coming in on a 5g cellular connection.
I honestly have no idea what the issue could be. Maybe debian 13? Maybe my install of the pip packages in the instructions. There is a issue with some virtual envirnment when installing. I used --break-system-packages to be able to install? I am new to that and there are not updated install instructions for Slinger for that.

If you're only using the linux box for Slinger then don't bother with a virtual env. It's only useful for a multi-user setup where the average joe shouldn't be messing with the primary python config. Make yourself root and add the needed packages.

Shooting in the dark, but usually, random dropping of TCP connections is often a symptom of an IP address conflict, or a mismatched MTU size (though in recent years this does not happen that often anymore). Especially considering it works with the other OS. There is a lot you can test, starting with ip link show, dmesg, journalctl -xe, through nc sling_server_ip 8080 > /dev/null etc...

Yes, that could well be. "arp -n" might be useful too to make sure the HW address isn't changing.

there maybe a clue or two in the slinger log file. Post he output the next time the connection drops.
