Dear GitBook Team,
I would like to request native support for first-line indentation in GitBook — for example, indenting the first line of a paragraph by two characters.
First-line indentation is a standard and widely expected typography rule in many CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) languages. It serves as a clear visual indicator of paragraph boundaries and is an essential element of readable, high-quality text layout. Without this feature, CJK content in GitBook looks visually inconsistent and less professional compared to traditional typesetting norms.
Currently, GitBook does not provide any Markdown syntax, theme option, or CSS override that reliably enables first-line indentation. This makes it difficult for writers who work primarily with CJK languages to produce documents that meet conventional formatting expectations.
I kindly request that GitBook add built-in support for first-line indentation, either through:
Such support would greatly improve the writing and reading experience for users working with CJK content, and help GitBook better serve its global audience.
Implementing it would also be almost effortless:
Thank you for considering this feature.
