Green Software Patterns Working Group Meeting Minutes

Summary

The team discussed the lack of progress on the patterns categorization project due to scheduling challenges and asynchronous work limitations. Key decisions were made to cancel the regular patterns call and instead schedule a dedicated workshop session to collaboratively reorganize patterns using the new SWEBOK-inspired framework. The focus will be on clustering existing patterns into new categories using a Miro board exercise.

Key Discussions

Scheduling and Meeting Format

• The regular patterns call time doesn't work for all core team members, with Francesca unable to attend and varying availability across the group
• Asynchronous work on pattern categorization has proven ineffective - comments and individual edits are slower than collaborative discussion
• Team agreed that a dedicated workshop session would be more efficient than continuing with the current meeting structure

Pattern Categorization Approach

• Need to define the "design" category more clearly before proceeding with pattern allocation
• Should populate patterns into new categories as a team effort rather than individually to handle disagreements in real-time
• Plan to use Miro board with patterns as post-it notes that can be moved and clustered into top-level categories
• Opportunity to eliminate patterns that don't fit clearly or combine/group related patterns (e.g., multiple image-related patterns)
• Less is more philosophy - should aim to reduce and consolidate where possible

Information Architecture vs. UI Design

• Russ has been experimenting with new UI for cards, but team agreed to focus on information architecture first
• Current tool has limited options, so data/information architecture should drive decisions
• UI design and landing page improvements (including role-based views) will be addressed after IA is finalized

Key Decisions

• Cancel next regular patterns call and replace with dedicated workshop session
• Schedule dedicated 60-90 minute workshop for Monday or Wednesday morning (avoiding Tuesdays and Fridays)
• Russ to prepare Miro board with patterns as moveable elements before the workshop
• Focus workshop on clustering exercise - moving patterns into new category structure collaboratively
• Information architecture comes first, UI/design work to follow after IA is established
• Workshop open to others but priority is getting core four team members together
