Following our January 15th session, we've restructured all 61 patterns using the new framework. This meeting aims to finalize the structure so we can proceed with website implementation.

• Context: Some categories have excessively long pattern lists requiring sub-categorization. We need to use domain-specific frameworks practitioners already know rather than inventing new structures.

Summary

The Patterns 2.0 project team met to resolve the subcategorization approach for the new catalogue and align on launch timing. The team agreed that subcategories will be unique to each top-level category, with cross-cutting topics (such as AI lifecycle and personas) implemented as tags that power alternative browse paths rather than appearing in the primary navigation. The group also agreed to move away from Docusaurus and build a custom site, with Russ prototyping the new structure before the next meeting. The target remains to launch the revised catalogue before the summer break, aligned with the SCI for AI publication in Q2 2026. Pattern content creation will be led by subject matter experts from the Green AI Committee and Standards Working Group, while the project team focuses on catalogue structure and platform.

Key Discussions

Subcategorization approach

• The team evaluated two options: cross-cutting subcategories (the same topics repeated across all categories) versus unique subcategories specific to each top-level category.
• After discussion, the group agreed on unique subcategories per category. Cross-cutting topics will be used as tags, enabling filtering and alternative navigation paths (browse by persona, browse by topic) without duplicating items in the sidebar.
• Categories with large numbers of patterns (14+) will use a small number of subcategories to keep lists scannable.

Platform and site build

• The current Docusaurus-based platform was identified as a constraint on UX capabilities (no support for role-based navigation, tag filtering, or form-based submissions).
• The team agreed to move away from Docusaurus. Russ will prototype the new site — either vibe-coded or using Notion — based on the existing spreadsheet structure.
• Francesca has previously built a vibe-coded prototype which will be reviewed as part of this process.

Pattern consolidation

• Several overlapping or overly specific patterns were identified for merging (e.g., "Reduce Transmitted Data" + "Compress Transmitted Data"; Kubernetes-specific scaling patterns).
• Russ will raise PRs for the proposed merges. The team agreed that overly specific patterns should be broadened first before being removed, to preserve the underlying insight.

AI patterns and SCI for AI alignment

• The SCI for AI standard is gathering public feedback and references to the patterns catalogue have been raised in both the Standards Working Group and the Green AI Committee.
• AI pattern revision will be led by the Green AI Committee and contributors like Naveen, who has existing work in this area.
• Naveen noted that ML-specific lifecycle phases (training, inference) may not map cleanly to the current SDLC-based categories and will review and flag issues.

Contribution process and pattern enhancements

• The current GitHub PR-based submission process was identified as a barrier to contribution.
• The team agreed to move toward a form-based submission with an approval workflow, modelled on the Policy Radar process.
• New pattern properties were discussed: author attribution, cost and carbon impact indicators, and gamification elements (badges, levels) to incentivise contributions.

Community adoption

• Liya reported that a university researcher (Adam Bofia) has been using the patterns catalogue for an academic project on green mining software — a positive signal of real-world adoption.
