How to debug a broken HASPone?

I bought an assembled unit about 7 months ago. A few months it stopped working and I am only just starting to investigate.

When I wire it into an outlet and turn back on the power, nothing happens. The screen doesn't light up, it doesn't connect to Home Assistant, nothing :(

I have little to no idea about hardware/electronics, so need some really basic instructions about how to proceed from here!

That's no good! If the device isn't connecting to the network, the next step is to disassemble the unit and try to collect debug logs via the USB port inside. Follow this guide for instructions on how to do that.

Thank you for the reply! So after dissembling (had to use a Torx-6 for the internal screws as I don't have a hex small enough) and plugging in to USB I do actually see it connecting to the network. It probably was too when I hardwired it, but I assumed it wasn't with the screen off.

The next good news is that I can see the admin page in my browser, so something is running, and I enabled Telnet debug. But I am unable to connect from my Mac:

I then tried following https://rjdlee.com/getting-started-with-wemos-d1-on-mac-osx/ to connect over USB (installing v2.2.0 of the esp8266 of the board software; the latest one didn't show the WeMos board). Initially it didn't work, but after rebooting the HASPone I was able to use the "Serial Monitor" to see some output:

So it looks like it is booting.

My next theory was that an automation I had to dim the screen to 0 when idle was causing it to appear that the screen was broken, so I changed that to dim to 85%. Still no luck.

which means it's detecting the touches, but during boot? My guess is it's constantly rebooting?

So from here I'm thinking I'll just Factory Reset from the admin UI, but wondering if you have any other thoughts before I do?

Here's what I'm looking at in your logs:

MQTT Return Code 5 is what you'll see when attempting to attach to an MQTT broker that is expecting a username/password. When you setup Home Assistant, you created a user which should be usable here too. In the admin web page, fill out the MQTT User and MQTT Password fields with your HA credentials and lets see what happens!
