ApniDukaan E-Commerce Development Tasks

This document outlines all the manual development tasks required to complete the ApniDukaan e-commerce platform. The project currently has the infrastructure setup, configuration files, and package definitions, but lacks the actual source code implementation.

Project Status

Completed:

  • Project structure and workspace configuration
  • Package.json files with dependencies for all services
  • Docker Compose configuration with all infrastructure services
  • Kubernetes deployment manifests
  • Environment variable templates
  • Basic build and development scripts
  • WARP.md documentation file

Missing - Requires Implementation:

  • All source code for frontend and backend services
  • Database schemas and models
  • GraphQL schemas and resolvers
  • Authentication system
  • API endpoints
  • Frontend components and pages
  • Tests for all services

Core Implementation Tasks

1. Backend Shared Package (backend/shared/)

Priority: HIGH - Required by all other services

Tasks:

  • Create TypeScript interfaces and types for:
    • User models (User, Profile, Wishlist)
    • Product models (Product, Category, Review)
    • Order models (Order, Cart, OrderItem)
    • Payment models (Payment, PaymentMethod, Transaction)
  • Implement common utilities:
    • Database connection helpers
    • Redis connection utilities
    • Kafka producer/consumer helpers
    • JWT token utilities
    • Validation schemas (using Joi)
    • Error handling middleware
    • Logging utilities (Winston)
    • Rate limiting middleware
  • Create authentication middleware
  • Implement CORS and security middleware
  • Add input sanitization utilities

2. User Service (backend/user-service/)

Priority: HIGH - Authentication dependency for all other services

Tasks:

  • Set up MongoDB connection and Mongoose models
  • Create GraphQL schema for user operations
  • Implement user registration and authentication
  • Add Google OAuth integration
  • Create JWT token generation and refresh logic
  • Implement user profile management
  • Add password reset functionality
  • Create wishlist management
  • Set up Redis for session management
  • Add email service integration (SendGrid)
  • Implement rate limiting for auth endpoints
  • Add comprehensive input validation
  • Write unit and integration tests

3. Catalog Service (backend/catalog-service/)

Priority: HIGH - Core product functionality

Tasks:

  • Set up MongoDB with product collections
  • Create Mongoose models for products, categories, reviews
  • Implement GraphQL schema for catalog operations
  • Add product CRUD operations
  • Create category management system
  • Implement product search and filtering
  • Add review and rating system
  • Integrate AWS S3/MinIO for image uploads
  • Add inventory management
  • Implement product caching with Redis
  • Create Kafka events for inventory changes
  • Add elasticsearch integration for advanced search
  • Write comprehensive tests

Priority: MEDIUM - Depends on User and Catalog services

Tasks:

  • Create MongoDB models for orders and cart
  • Implement GraphQL schema for order operations
  • Add shopping cart functionality
  • Create order processing workflow
  • Implement order status tracking
  • Add inventory validation
  • Create Kafka events for order updates
  • Add order history and management
  • Implement cart persistence with Redis
  • Add order notifications
  • Create order analytics
  • Write tests for complex order flows

7. Frontend Application (frontend/)

Priority: HIGH - User interface

Tasks:

  • Set up Next.js 15 app structure
  • Configure Tailwind CSS
  • Set up Apollo Client for GraphQL
  • Create authentication system with NextAuth.js
  • Implement Zustand store for state management
  • Create page components:
    • Home page with product listings
    • Product detail pages
    • User authentication (login/register)
    • User dashboard and profile
    • Shopping cart
    • Checkout process
    • Order history
    • Product search and filtering
  • Add responsive design components
  • Integrate Stripe and PayPal payment flows
  • Implement real-time notifications
  • Add form validation with react-hook-form

Database Tasks

8. Database Schema Design

Tasks:

  • Design MongoDB collections for each service:
    • Users database: users, profiles, wishlists
    • Catalog database: products, categories, reviews
    • Orders database: orders, carts, order_items
    • Payments database: payments, payment_methods, transactions
  • Create database indexes for performance
  • Set up database migrations
  • Add data validation at database level
  • Create seed data for development

9. Kafka Event System

Tasks:

  • Define Kafka topics for:
    • User events (registration, profile updates)
    • Product events (inventory changes, new products)
    • Order events (created, updated, shipped, delivered)
    • Payment events (processed, failed, refunded)
  • Implement event producers in each service
  • Create event consumers for inter-service communication
  • Add event versioning and backward compatibility

Infrastructure Tasks

10. Development Environment

Tasks:

  • Complete Docker setup for all services
  • Add database initialization scripts
  • Configure local SSL certificates
  • Set up development data seeding
  • Create development utility scripts

11. Testing Infrastructure

Tasks:

  • Set up Jest test configuration for all services
  • Create test databases and cleanup scripts
  • Add integration test suites
  • Set up end-to-end testing with Playwright
  • Create test data factories
  • Add performance testing setup

12. Production Deployment

Tasks:

  • Configure production environment variables
  • Set up CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions
  • Add Kubernetes secrets management
  • Configure monitoring and logging (New Relic, CloudWatch)
  • Set up SSL certificates and domain configuration
  • Add backup and disaster recovery procedures

Priority Order for Implementation

Phase 1 (Core Foundation) - 4-6 weeks

  1. Backend Shared Package - Common utilities and types
  2. User Service - Authentication and user management
  3. API Gateway - Service composition and routing
  4. Basic Frontend - Authentication and basic layout

Phase 2 (Core Features) - 6-8 weeks

  1. Catalog Service - Product management and search
  2. Frontend Product Pages - Product browsing and details
  3. Order Service - Shopping cart and order management
  4. Frontend Cart/Checkout - Shopping experience

Phase 3 (Advanced Features) - 4-6 weeks

  1. Payment Service - Payment processing
  2. Frontend Payment Integration - Complete checkout flow
  3. Advanced Features - Reviews, wishlist, notifications
  4. Performance Optimization - Caching, search, optimization

Phase 4 (Production Ready) - 3-4 weeks

  1. Comprehensive Testing - All test suites
  2. Production Infrastructure - Monitoring, CI/CD
  3. Security Hardening - Security audit and fixes
  4. Documentation - API docs, deployment guides

Estimated Timeline: 17-24 weeks (4-6 months)

This represents a substantial full-stack development project requiring expertise in:

  • Node.js/TypeScript backend development
  • GraphQL and Apollo Federation
  • Next.js/React frontend development
  • MongoDB database design
  • Kafka event streaming
  • Docker/Kubernetes deployment
  • Payment integration (Stripe/PayPal)
  • Authentication systems
  • Microservices architecture

Each service will need careful coordination to ensure proper GraphQL schema composition and event-driven communication between services.
