Since this isn't covered in the user guide and it took me a bit of messing around with the device to figure this out:

To unload the S1, depress the lever below the filament outlet, on the side of the S1 that corresponds to the spool that you wish to unload. This will cause the filament drive motor to retract the filament. As the S1 retracts the filament, make sure to re-wind the filament onto your spool.
It doesn't work! The motors just keep going back and forth! What happened?
If something downstream of the S1 (likely your extruder) has engaged a drive or other clamping force on the filament, the S1 will not be able to retract the filament. It will sense the tension on the filament and reverse direction to remove the tension. Disengage the clamping force and try retracting with the S1 again.
