Add vscode extension for formatting both for R and python

Since vscode is used a lot in the data science images, having a good and quick formatter for both python and R could increase the code quality of people using the plateform.

I suggest adding to the vscode image image :

• for python, the ruff vscode extension : https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=charliermarsh.ruff
• for R, the air formatter extension : https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Posit.air-vscode

I can try to do a PR adding these extension when I find some spared time.

Thank you for opening the issue. We try to limit the extensions we install in the images but having a formatter really seems a good thing.
If you wish to, you can do a PR adding the extensions or I'll do it.

However, if one wants to format the code on-save, he then will have to modify the settings.json file himself as we do not want to make choices for the users. To make the experience smoother for the users, an initialization script can be used. To facilitate things, I can suggest adding the corresponding customization of the configuration file in our initialization scripts repo

Thanks for the commentary ! I totally agree with the choice let to the user for formatting and for the suggestion.

I opened :

• a PR adding the extension : vscode:adding-formatter-extensions-r-python #339
• a PR adding the customization for the code-on-save in settings.json : vscode/customize-settings-add-formatting-on-save sspcloud-init-scripts#10

I was not sure how to test the docker image, so let me know if anything needs further work .

Thanks @strayMat I just tested your changes, it works fine. The new extensions will be shipped with the new batch of images tomorrow. Leaving the issue opened so you can test on your own (on the SSP Cloud) and close the issue yourself if it works as intended

It seems that there is was a problem with the ruff extension. The default installation (manually in a launched interactive service or with the bash script called by docker) install an old version of the extension (2022) which is not working any more.

Updating to the newest version manually (2025.32.0) works fine.
Programmatically, forcing the extension version charliermarsh.ruff@2025.32.0 seems to work fine (at least when testing the docker image locally) However, we will be stuck with this version.

Should I reopen the PR to try this fix ?

For R, everything works fine.
