Media Upload System - Implementation Complete ?

?? Overview

Comprehensive media upload system supporting files, images, URLs, and embedded content as specified in PRD Section 5.1. Backend infrastructure is complete, frontend components are fully functional.

??? Architecture

Backend Infrastructure

  • MediaService: Google Cloud Storage integration, thumbnail generation, metadata extraction
  • Media Controllers: REST API endpoints for upload, URL parsing, link previews
  • File Processing: Sharp for image processing, Cheerio for URL parsing
  • Authentication: JWT token validation, user-scoped file access

Frontend Components

  • MediaUploader: Drag-drop interface with file upload + URL parsing tabs
  • LinkPreview: Rich preview generation for websites, YouTube, Vimeo
  • MediaNode: React Flow nodes for AI manipulation of media elements
  • Canvas Integration: Direct drag-drop onto canvas, automatic node creation

?? User Experience

File Upload Methods

  1. Drag & Drop: Drop files directly onto canvas
  2. Media Button: Click media button in top toolbar
  3. Upload Tab: Browse and select multiple files
  4. URL Tab: Paste YouTube, Vimeo, or webpage URLs

Supported Media Types

  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP with thumbnail generation
  • Documents: PDF, Word docs with file type icons
  • Spreadsheets: CSV, Excel files with data icons
  • Videos: YouTube, Vimeo embed previews with play buttons
  • Websites: Link previews with Open Graph metadata

?? Visual Design

Media Nodes on Canvas

  • Images: 200x150px with overlay filename
  • Videos: 280x180px with play button and platform branding
  • PDFs: 200x160px red gradient with document icon
  • Spreadsheets: 200x160px green/orange gradient with chart icons
  • Websites: 240x160px with preview image and domain info

Interactive Features

  • Hover Effects: Scale transforms, color changes, shadows
  • Selection States: Blue glow, checkmark indicators
  • React Flow Handles: Connection points for AI manipulation
  • Click Actions: Open in new tab, copy URLs

?? Technical Implementation

API Endpoints

POST /api/media/upload - File upload (50MB limit)
POST /api/media/parse-url - URL to media conversion
GET /api/media/preview - Link preview generation
DELETE /api/media/:id - File deletion
GET /api/media/:id/info - File metadata

React Flow Integration

// Media nodes automatically created on upload
const mediaNode = {
  id: `media-${media.id}`,
  type: 'media',
  position: { x, y },
  data: { ...mediaUploadResult }
};

Canvas Layers

  • Layer 1: TLDraw (camera/viewport)
  • Layer 2: Excalidraw (drawings)
  • Layer 3: React Flow (AI nodes + media)

?? Features Complete

? File Upload: Multi-file drag-drop with progress indicators ? URL Parsing: YouTube, Vimeo, website link previews ? Thumbnail Generation: Image resizing, metadata extraction ? Cloud Storage: Google Cloud Storage with public access ? Media Nodes: AI-manipulatable nodes in React Flow ? Drag & Drop: Direct canvas file dropping with visual feedback ? Type Validation: File type filtering, size limits ? Error Handling: User-friendly error messages, retry logic ? Authentication: User-scoped file access, JWT validation

?? Usage Examples

Upload Images

  1. Click "Media" button in top toolbar
  2. Drag images into upload area or click to browse
  3. Images appear as nodes on canvas with thumbnails
  4. AI can manipulate nodes via voice commands

Add YouTube Videos

  1. Click "Media" ? "Add URL" tab
  2. Paste YouTube URL: https://youtube.com/watch?v=...
  3. Preview appears with thumbnail and title
  4. Click "Add" - video node created with play button

Direct Canvas Drop

  1. Drag PDF file directly onto canvas
  2. Visual overlay shows "Drop files to add to canvas"
  3. PDF node appears at drop location
  4. Ready for AI manipulation and connections

?? AI Integration

Media nodes are fully compatible with the existing AI command system:

  • Voice Commands: "Move that image to the right"
  • Visual Feedback: Nodes highlight during AI operations
  • Element Mapping: Media nodes sync with Excalidraw elements
  • Canvas Actions: Create, move, connect, group media elements

?? Next Steps

Media upload system is production-ready. Future enhancements:

  • Batch operations for multiple media files
  • Media library for reusing uploaded files
  • Advanced video controls (seek, playback speed)
  • OCR text extraction from uploaded documents
  • Real-time collaborative media editing

The media upload system successfully bridges the gap between static file storage and AI-manipulatable canvas elements, enabling users to seamlessly integrate rich media content into their collaborative visual workspace.
