A wishlist section?

Update: Collecting package wishlist issues here, to be split out into actionable issues from the fireplace

It was brought up on slack that having a section dedicated to a list of desired packages and applications might be useful. Examples include:

• A Julia version of DS9 with both a package and a binary application
  • Related work: SAOImagesDS9.jl, XPA.jl, SAMP.jl, AstroImageView.jl
  • We should note that DS9 is no longer being funded so is unlikely to be maintained in the foreseeable future and it has bugs that are unlikely to be fixed.
• An AstroArchives.jl package to download data queried from VirtualObservatory.jl
  • e.g., querying TESS TPFs from MAST
• A package for ASDF I/O (I think ASDF2.jl may address this already?)
• A Julia version of XRADIO (This may fall under the purview of the Radio Astronomy Group currently being formed)
• Create a package containing radiative process models, such as blackbody, bremsstrahlung, gyrosynchrotron, synchrotron, line and collisional emission, and ionization rates. Such a package will provide a set of validated and optimized models for use in data analysis, similar to the SpecialFunction.jl package.

An AstroArchives.jl package to download data queried from VirtualObservatory.jl

I wonder what exactly do you mean here? "Download data" as in "save the tabular data retrieved by VirtualObservatory.jl on disk"? Or something else?..
VirtualObservatory.jl has a pretty good support of the VO TAP protocol, including both data download and upload.
Or do you mean improving support for other VO protocols?

No. VirtualObservatory.jl lists the observations that are available from an archive, but there is no functionality to be able to download the actual observational data. Querying the database is one thing, while downloading the data associated with that database is another. For example, I can query the MAST archive to list the observations for a TESS source, but I cannot download the associated TESS light curves for that source. The query and download use different servers and protocols.

I see, you mean VirtualObservatory.jl cannot download all kinds of data in existence :) Specifically, currently it does not support those datasets that are stored externally. Most commonly images are stored like this, but also tess lightcurves as you say.
(btw there are WIP pieces of code in VO.jl to support that; let me know if you are interested! I remember chatting with Mark Taylor at some point about more complete VO support in Julia, but didn't really have a usecase myself)

Meanwhile, VO.jl definitely can download tabular data. For example, tests (https://github.com/JuliaAPlavin/VirtualObservatory.jl/blob/master/test/runtests.jl) ensure it can get tabular data from: vizier, simbad, ned, gaia archive, cadc. But really, any VO service :)

Thanks all, I've updated the descr to include other data types. Yes, we would be interested about your chats with Mark. For Paul's particular example, I think the dream would be having something like lightkurve's search_targetpixelfile functionality, which makes querying from MAST pretty convenient
