Upgrade EJBCA CE 8.2 -> 9.3: default lang is Boznian

Hello,
I try to upgrade EJBCA CE 8.2.0.1 to 9.3.7 following the instructions.

The configuration file web.properties no longer contains the properties

• web.availablelanguages
• web.contentencoding

In a document (I currently don't know where) I found the hint that these
options should be added to the new config file. During the upgrade
process these settings would be taken over. So I have added these 2 lines
to web.properties:

web.availablelanguages=de,en,bs,cs,fr,ja,pt,sv,uk,zh,vi
web.contentencoding=UTF-8

Unfortunately after upgrading the default language is Boznian.
I can change the language in the GUI but I don't known where Boznian is now
the default language too.

What can I do to force English as the default language?

Settings that don't do anything any longer have been removed.

Content-encoding is always UTF-8 (Content-Type: text/html;charset=UTF-8). You can check yourself in the browser inspector.

The admin UI default language is set in system configuration and is not related to any config setting, and has not, if even, been. You have "System Configuration->Administrator preferences" (defaults), and "System configuration->My preferences" (individual administrator).

In the (old) properties file it clearly says:

# When adding languages to this do _NOT_ change the order as this affects the already configured languages for admins, i.e. it's based on index in this list.
# Default: en,bs,cs,de,fr,ja,pt,sv,uk,zh,vi
#web.availablelanguages=en,bs,cs,de,fr,ja,pt,sv,uk,zh,vi

It looks like you changed this order sometime, did you? I checked back git history 10 years and de was never the first option.

Hello Tomas,
thank you very much for your quick reply. We have setup our first installation in 2009, if I remember right. So we might have changed this setting in this time. But in my opinion it makes no sense, that the index of a language has changed after an upgrade. I haven't seen such an behaviour in the time since 2009.
Btw, we are thinking of switching to the enterprise version in 2027.

As part of a configuration setting cleanup, we don't want things configured in properties file as it's not "container" friendly, the list is now hardcoded, in the order that was the default. So the thing that changed was that your custom order is no longer loaded. You can find this in the WebLanguages.java file.

Unfortunately I can now see that the order did change abit over the years, until about 2017 or so. I found this in an old ticket from 2017

After an upgrade from 4.0.15 to 6.5.0.4, administrators language preferences are lost.

This is due to a modification of the language order and the fact that the language seems to be an integer (1, 2, ...) that reference the language on the list instead of the real value ('fr' 'en', ...)

4.0.15 : 

Default: EN,DE,ES,FR,IT,JA,PT,SE,ZH
#web.availablelanguages=EN,DE,ES,FR,IT,JA,PT,SE,ZH

6.5.0.4 :

Default: en,bs,cs,de,fr,ja,pt,sv,uk,zh
#web.availablelanguages=en,bs,cs,de,es,fr,it,ja,pt,sv,uk,zh

So administrators that are configured with French language in 4.0.15 become with Deutsch language after upgrade (4th value on the list)

Do you have many administrators that are affected or is it fixable manually?

This is no problem as long as this is the only place where EJBCA speaks now Boznian. We are a small number of admins. So we can change this.
