I think the server hosting the files does not send a CORS header. Therefore, the browser does not download the files for security reasons. This is not an error in sample viewer.

I tested it with a sample asset and works with GitHub URLs (see attachment).

On the other hand, sample viewer should have better error handling for this case, and it seems like the validator in sample viewer does complain about missing files if remote URLs are used (which is not the case if you drop the files into the validator website).
